- Nancy Powers, Hilton Head, SC

At Cogdell & Mendrala, John showed me that good leadership could be kind and considerate. He was a role model and a friend. I treasure the time that I worked with him, and he will be greatly missed.

- John & Jessica Jacobs, Chicago, IL

We met John in 1986 when he designed our home at the Landings. He was personal, professional, and one of the kindest people we ever met. Working with him was a pleasure, and we love our house to this day. In fact, every time we evacuate for a hurricane, we take his blue prints with us. The Memorial Service truly described John. He will be missed.

- Harriet and Paul Kulbersh, Savannah, GA

Dear Mimi, I am so saddened by your loss. I was among the many of John's Martin Van Buren HS friends you met a few years ago at our Las Vegas reunion. We've been recalling his performance in 'Finian's Rainbow', our senior class show. My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Lynn Ritchie

John was a great architect and a very patient and understanding person who would take the time to explain his designs and the method to achieve them. I had the pleasure of supplying millwork on many of the projects he designed and I will always remember his calm and understanding manner as well as his great designs and mastery of architecure. I pray for the family to have peace. Ron Horton-Savannah Millwork

What a great loss it is for us losing this humble and quiet man. His character and excellence in both his public and private life are goals that we should all strive for in our own lives. I am honored and greatful to have known him. I will miss him for a short while and then we will visit again in his new home with our SAVIOR. May the good LORD ease your sorrows and remind you of all the great memories in your life with John. God bless you Mimi and Family and let me know if I can help you in any way. Our deepest sympathy's to you. Scott Gates and Family

- Scott Gates, Savannah, GA

Mimi and all family, I grew up with John and am so very sad. Our first job together was Harriet and Paul Kulbersh and from then on we clicked. We did so many jobs together and I would not be where I am today without his trust and influence. That goes back 23 years. After much coaxing Don finally asked me to help with a job and the rest is history there as well. But NO ONE has had a bigger affect and influence on me than John and I will always remember our special times and all that he taught me about construction, design and most importantly patience with clients. I can't imagine life without him as I'm sure his family and Don feel the same. Thank you for so much John, we will miss you so!

- charlotte tilton, hilton head, SC

- Sandra Buttimer, Savannah, GA

I had the pleasure of working with John for many years. He embodied the true spirit of an Architect who dealt with both owner and contractor fairly, showing no favoritism. His word was his bond and you could take what he told you 'to the bank'. John was such an even tempered man; I don't remember ever seeing him angry. It was a pleasure to have known and worked with him and I will truly miss him.

- Jim Artley, Jr., Sylvania, GA

I worked for John Mendrala for three years while getting my master's degree at Cogdell & Mendrala Architects. He was an amazing leader, teacher, and friend. I'm truly honored that I had the opportunity learn from him and am so blessed to have called him a friend. I know that I will never have another boss like John or work in another environment that was as wonderful as what he help to create at Cogdell & Mendrala Architects. He lead an outstanding life, and I am so proud to have known him, if only for three short years. He impacted my life and the lives of many others in a kind and generous way.
